What Were They Thinking?

03 May 2011 | By davetaylor-wafx in Sports | No Comments Yet

Not to long ago the NHL banned Octopus from being thrown on the ice (a Detroit tradition), a new rule has taken out more funn in the NHL. Today the NHL announced that the Green Men who hang around the penality box in Vancouver to annoy the visiting teams can no longer touch the glass and no more hand stands. They were fun to watch and now have to tone down on their act. Let’s take a moment and look at some of their best moments below featuring some bizarre props.

An amazing moment last night when fans in Philadelphia got word about Bin Laden being killed.

This is what they used for the NBA Playoffs?

I’m still not sure how I feel about this one yet, although I do like that fact that Jason Bonham is doing the drumming. The theme song for this year’s NBA Playoffs is a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog as sung by Pussycat Doll member Nicole Scherzinger. Check it out.

Amazing Torando Footage

We were pretty lucky in the Hampton Roads area tonight with the storms. Check out this footage from Tuscaloosa, Alabama where the Tornado went through on Wednesday. It really picks up after the four minute park. Scary stuff.

You wouldn’t see this on TV today

Two things in this video really stand out and they both occur in the first 8 seconds. One is the bad edit (watch the woman drinking from the glass) the second is the attitude the husband has in the commercial. Not something that’s happening on TV or in homes today (at least I hope not). There’s were really less PC then.

Nerves of Steel in a Tornado

From the destruction the storms brought this weekend, there’s footage as some of it happened in North Carolina. An amazing video has popped up on the web of a guy calmly doing play by play of the scene as a Tornado closely passed by. This guy sounds very relaxed. Could you have remained this calm with a tornado that close?

Two Guys one Stanley Cup

Can't touch the cup!

Can't touch the cup!

With the Stanley Cup playoffs underway I figured its time to share my picks. As much as I want to be  the one to root for my Detroit Red Wings, I only seem them getting to the Semi-Finals. For the first time in years I have a feeling a team out of Canada will win. Vancouver is just too good to not win it all. I’m predicting them to beat the Flyers in the finals. We shall see. I wouldn’t mind being wrong here but the Wings didn’t play that great at home in the last month. That has me worried.

I recently had the chance to interview the keeper of the Stanley Cup. Phil Pritchard. Phil is the one who gets to take the Cup around to various locations and whereever the players want to celebrate with it. He shares some great stories in this video.

Bad Timing In Atlanta

#20. Turner Field, Home of the Atlanta Braves

Times visited: 1
Date: 8/3/02 vs. St. Louis (W: 6-1)

You know sometimes when you make a trip to the ballpark you go to see a certain player or two or maybe a team. My trip to Atlanta was planned about 2 months out. Thinking I would see maybe Greg Maddux or Tom Glavine be the starter, I get Jason Marquis. While a decent pitcher at times, not the same caliber at Maddux or Glavine.

Turner Field didn’t do a whole lot for me but I was very impressed that they appreciate their history. Turner is still relatively new but the previous stadium hasn’t been forgotten. Fulton County Stadium was the old Braves Stadium and there’s not a parking lot where it once stood. Except for one spot, the fence where Hank Aaron hit’s his 715th home run still stands and it’s a nice touch to leave up.

The staff at Turner Field also takes their National Anthem very seriously. Once it starts and you’re not in your seat, you’re not gonna get to your seat, they’ll block off your access until the anthem is over.

The game wasn’t much of a matchup. Thanks to a couple of home runs from Chipper Jones. John Smoltz did come out to close out the ninth.

Viral Polar Bear

I love a good viral video and this one, not sure if it’s real or fake. Judge for yourself as a skier comes across what looks like a polar bear. Is that bear an actual part of the video or some special effect?
