Those darn Wings

11 May 2010 | By davetaylor-wafx in Uncategorized | No Comments Yet

Well it was bound to happen. After a struggling first round the Detroit Red Wings were eliminated from the playoffs from the San Jose Sharks. It wasn’t too much of a surpise except that the Wings only won one game. Not good. Just had a feeling it wasn’t going to be the year. Hopefully they can get it together for next year. In the meantime, I hope the Tigers can play well throughout the summer. Going to need that with the Wings and Pistons out of action.

Thank you Ernie

While growing up in Detroit summer time meant listening to Tiger baseball. Whether at home, in the car or on Lake St. Clair. I can remember being on the boat with a transistor radio listening to Ernie Harwell call Tiger games. I wasn’t the only person in Michigan with this memory and thanks to the powerful AM station that Ernie was on for a number of years many people around the country was able to listen to him.

Ernie Harwell has quite the life and career. He was traded as a broadcaster to the Brooklyn Dodgers for a catcher. The only broadcaster ever traded for a player. When he was fired in the early 90s in Detroit. Fans protested Tiger games and when the Tigers were sold the following year, Ernie was brought back.

People loved him as a person and the way he called baseball games. He had many trademark calls as well. For home runs he would say “Long Gone” and for double plays “two for the price of one” just to name a few. He also had the ability to “know” where every fan was from that caught a foul ball.

Before the Tigers he had the distinction of being the first Baltimore Oriole announcer as well.  He left for Detroit in 1960. He finally retired in 2002.

I was lucky enough to have met Ernie Harwell twice. Once as a 8 year old when he was doing a book signing and the second time was in 2005 when I attended the All-Star Game in Detroit. For a few minutes I got to talk to Ernie about the game and asked for advice on a baseball broadcasting career. He was a very nice person to talk with my only regret was not getting a picture with him. If I can track down the audio of the interview I’ll post it.

Ernie Harwell passed away at the age of 92 yesterday about 8 months after announcing that he had cancer. He said his goodbyes in Detroit in September last year at a Tiger game and strong as ever even though he knew what road he was about to head down. The way baseball games are on TV so much now a days I hope you can take the time and listen to the games on the radio every once in a while. Let those guys paint the picture that you can see too easily on the big screen.

He used to open up the first exhibition game of the season with this poem:

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
the flowers appear on the earth;
the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land

Thank you Ernie for being you and letting us bring into our homes or boats or cars for many years.

What is summer, with it’s voice now gone?

My Wings

I don’t have a good feeling about this. The Wings lost at home 5-2 yesterday and are now heading into a game seven against the Coyotes. This never felt like it was “their season” but going out in the first round would not be a good thing.

Mary J Blige who covered two Zeppelin songs on her latest album performs Stairway to Heaven on American Idol. Better her than the contestants.

Baseball is here!

The 2010  baseball season is upon us. Time to make some picks for the upcoming season.

Let’s start with my Detroit Tigers. After a sad, sad end to the season in which they were in first for most of it only to lose on the last day of the season and miss to playoffs thanks to the pesky twins, how did I think they will do this season? They will contend but I don’t see them making the playoffs. The divsion will come down to them, the Twins and the White Sox but I expect the Twins to take it even without their closer.

Here are my divsion picks:

AL

East: Yankees - too good

Central: Twins

West: I’d like to pick the Marniers they should be good but I’m going with the Rangers

Wild Card: Rays

NL

East: Phillies

Central: St. Louis

West: Rockies

Wild: Dodgers

I look for a rematch the World Series but this time the Phillies win.

Hopefully I do a better pick than I did with my basketball bracket.

Bracket Busted

Things didn’t look too hot after Kansas lost in the second round even worse when Sryacuse lost early as well. I did have West Virginia going to the Finals though. That was all I had going for me until Duke beat them on Saturday. This was a good tourney and except for that horrible Michigan State/Butler game over the weekend I have enjoyed most of it. Hope Butler pulls it out tonight!

One of my favorite times of the year is approaching, and I’m not talking opening day for baseball but rather something not too far behind. It’s the college tourney that starts on Thursday.

It’s tough trying to figure out who will win this year. There’s no clear standout this season. Kansas may be the best team but their midwest region is so  packed that if they get out of there they should win but it won’t be an easy road.

I always hope for a George MasoViln story to happen every year, to me that creates a better tourney, than one where they are a few upsets like last year. Who will be in the final four this year? Here are my picks:

Villanova

West Virginia

Syracuse

Kansas

I think Syracuse can win it all this year.

By the way, it would be very very nice if ODU can beat Notre Dame. I can never get enough ND loses. Go Monarchs!

Late Nights Heat Up Again

Jay Leno returns to late night TV tonight. Him and Dave will be battling it out once again and both shows have loaded up on some big name guests this week as well. It will be interesting to see how it works out between them and if they’ll make any jokes about each other now that they are facing each other directly. Seeing them do a commercial during the Super Bowl was quite the shocker and funny as well.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Conan when he's allowed to return to television in September. I was suprised he didn't stay on NBC and go with a Midnight show. It may have been on tough on the ego, understandably but he would still be working. I remember meeting his sidekick Andy last July in St. Louis who just started working with Conan again. He was pretty exciting about the possibilites of working late night. By the way, not mentioned in the late night wars a whole lot is Jimmy Kimmel. If you haven't seen his show which comes on at midnight, there's some pretty funny stuff on there, give it a shot. A few weeks ago he actually did a show as Jay Leno. Yes, he dressed up as Jay and talked like him through the whole show.

Now that Jay is back the late night wars will be interesting and should produce some entertaining shows.

Polar Plunge Coldness

Snow on the Beach!

I have to thank everyone who came out to the Polar Plunge. The elements were unlike any other plunge. Usually we’re lucky to have a 40 or 50 degree day, not this time.

The day started off with rain showers, then a bit of ice and then snow flurries. It was very cool to see snow on the beach. It was also amazing to see thousands of Plungers go into the ocean in the middle of all of this. Over $853,000 was raised for Special Olympics Virginia. This was the plunge to remember!
